The Jones Financial Companies, L.L.L.P., through its subsidiary, Edward D. Jones & Co., L.P., operates as a registered broker-dealer primarily serving individual investors. It operates in two segments, the United States of America and Canada. The company clears and settles listed and over-the-counter equities, municipal bonds, corporate bonds, mutual funds, and annuity transactions. It also sells life insurance, long-term care insurance, disability insurance, fixed and variable annuities, and other types of insurance products of unaffiliated insurance companies to its clients through its financial advisors; and distributes mutual fund shares, as well as provides investment advisory, trust and investment management, sub-transfer agent accounting, individual retirement account, and custodial services. In addition, it is also involved in principal transactions in market-making municipal obligations, over-the-counter corporate obligations, government obligations, unit investment trusts, mortgage-backed securities and certificates of deposit; and offers investment banking services, such as underwriting and distribution of securities. Further, the company provides investment recommendations and market information; acts as a custodian for client securities; manages various securities and cash processing, such as trades, dividends, corporate actions, client cash receipts and disbursements, client tax reporting, and statements; and handles the routing and settlement of customer transactions. It also serves various brokers, dealers, clearing organizations, depositories, and banks. As of December 31, 2013, the company operated a network of 11,647 branch offices, including 11,083 offices in the United States of America and 564 offices in Canada. The Jones Financial Companies, L.L.L.P. was founded in 1871 and is based in Des Peres, Missouri.
